Just 'cos..
I have two recipes, one where you just mix icing sugar, caster sugar and either eggs or egg yolks (which I've used before), and another, more complicated, one that involves other ingredients and heating some of them together (they're from books by Mary Berry and Delia Smith respectively, if that means anything to you).
Does anyone have experience with both types of recipe? Is the latter type worth the extra trouble? It's for the Christmas cake, and usually I just buy a packet.

My mum always makes the uncooked almond paste type - can't remember if it's a Delia recipe or reader's digest but it's yum.

Yeah, just looking at this post fills me with exhaustion, that someone would go to the trouble of making marzipan instead of just buying a tube of Odense.
Plus now I want marzipan... I adore marzipan.

I'm not a fan but the other half is. The plan is to get some marzipan and coat little pieces in (melted) chocolate at some point. I will use the opportunity to do the same with licorice.. and now I want chocolate coated licorice. Dammit.

I think probably if I do it, I'll use the easier version - because it's for round a Christmas cake, so who would notice the difference?
Then I need to decide if I want to try making royal icing (I've always just used a packet of fondant in the past, but now the children are a bit older, and my cousin did royal on her cake last year and I liked it). Decisions, decisions... and I consider this stuff to be a leisure activity really.
(I get to practice decorating things with fondant icing anyway, since Junior's birthday is shortly after Christmas).

Yes off to make a note for secret santa...! In the Nordics you can buy them, in the UK you can get Panda licorice and chocolate of your choosing and make your own... The combination is dangerously addictive.

I remember she used to stick it on the Christmas cake by spreading apricot jam on the cake. (Home made of course). Mums did things like that.

I did the easier version and used out-of-a-jar apricot jam to stick it to the cake, that was Saturday, then Monday I made royal icing and spread that over.

i should be careful when i ask people why they spend so much time on something that can be done simply. last night, i had to stop myself from spending 20 minutes making gravy for roast chicken.
