Did anyone else catch the Food Programme today? All about porridge... Link includes 3 recipes that were taste-tested. Makes me think whether I should try to get some classier oats and try making porridge the purist way (ie water, oats and salt).

That's the only way to go... although if I'm feeling down I like a little treacle or golden syrup on it.

I discovered the hard way that in England it's made with milk instead of water with sugar added.

i make mine in the microwave. combo of time pressures and hating to wash pans. i don't really notice a difference to the 'proper' stuff, but some people do.

I love it but get around to making it so rarely that I don't buy the oats since they'd just get stale. I'd cook it in water but then put milk, butter, and maple syrup on it!
I just looked up how long it would take to make oatmeal in an Instant Pot and it said a half hour (it just takes a couple minutes to cook; the rest of the time is for starting it up and then powering it down). Which is the same as on the stovetop, so I don't really get the point? (I don't have an Instant Pot yet, just curious about it still.)

I use cheapie oats and half and half milk and water to cook. Then I put cream on to eat it (used to add golden syrup, before I had a cut-back-on-sugar focus a little while back). Doesn't take half an hour either, in fact I usually turn it on, then go wash my face and put my contacts in and it's done or nearly so when I get back, depending on how hot the water was when I put it in (usually from the kettle, left over from making tea). I only do a small quantity too, which helps - an inch or so of oats in the bottom of a mug.
