Minor lightbulb moment

The 'Everyday Fruitcake' recipe that I used to make as a kid, and recently hunted down online (I could have looked it up irl, as the book it's from is owned by both my mother and my mother-in-law), is basically a rock cake recipe. ie, rub the fat into the flour and spices, stir in dried fruit and sugar, then bind together with egg and a bit of milk.

i have never come to terms with the name 'rock cake' possibly because the first ones i had were, in fact, rock hard.
