It’s the World Cup thread, for anyone interested in the beautiful game. World Cup starts tomorrow (with a less-than thrilling sounding match between Russia and Saudi Arabia). Who are you supporting? Which games will you be watching? Reykjavik Grapevine is a funny account to follow on Twitter during Iceland’s games #smitetheworld twitter.com/rvkgrapevine

We're doing a sweepstake at work, as it's a small team we all have three teams. I have France, Brazil and Panama, so naturally I'm rooting for Panama:D

You've got a good chance there with Brazil!
I love the stories of the smaller teams (like Peru who are in it for the first time since 1982).

I've got Uruguay in our sweep here at work. The corner of my heart that still beats for Argentina is like WTF?!

Portugal v Spain was a cracking game last night. Caught a little bit of the France-Aus game and have now been sucked into watching Argentina-Iceland even though I really need to go out!

Praise be to the Lord that I live in a sporting nation. We almost won 3 games last night: Soccer (football to some), Rugby Union and Cricket (and against the minnow English team - I'm pleased that we were not playing the masterful Scottish side).
We're pretty good at Netball, though, and field a respectable Mahjong team.

I watched the Germany Mexico match on SBS last night - the local German channel I was streaming online totally crashed, so on came the VPN and I went over to good old SBS.

He had buffer free football!

We watched most of the Germany-Mexico match in the restaurant of a country club in the company of family-of-pero, and when Mexico scored its goal I said "YES!" rather loudly and then got the immediate impression that everyone else in the room was either going for Germany or at least not as emotionally invested in Mexico's success as I was, lol. (Sorry Germans.)
Bummed that Costa Rica lost to Serbia in the morning, though.

Supporting Iran (this week). Though I doubt they'll do anything dangerous to Spain.

WTF Argentina?? But what an awful game - more than 10 yellow cards. Nasty buggers, the lot of them.

Wow, had not heard that bit. Actually, I'm trying to find some official stats on that. I saw something posted online about it but can't see anything definite to back it up.

Ah, sorry about that Liisa.
I've missed the games the last few days- catching up on BBC text commentary isn't quite the same, although it can be quite amusing. Will miss the England-Panama game too.

(but not expecting to win, dammit.)

In ours the winner gets £20 or so, so it's not a massive jackpot - if i win I'll buy treats for the team which I suspect is what most are planning on as well...

Thank FSM Australia is now out and we don't have to listen to more unending analysis of how we might somehow miraculously win this thing, or even just get to the finals.

Today's game was great - And not just because England won, but also because both teams played well and didn't go for the annoying theatrics or dirty tricks. Oh and...

I have to say strategically Russia would've been am easier opponent for England but Croatia deserved to win.
