I've seen the lightbulb and the Book of Kells. Now I need to go to Taiwan to see that cabbage!
I tend to avoid blockbuster exhibits and Important Sights because I hate waiting in line and being in crowded museums where you can't really see the things you're there to see because of all the people chatting and taking selfies etc. So the likelihood of my seeing many more of these things is low, unfortunately.
What really surprised me on that list was "Phar Lap's heart," though! She was just posting on here an hour or so ago!

Ah, so many places where I’ve been but apparently have completely neglected to see *the thing* that you’re supposed to see there! :-)
Things I have seen though: Dead Sea scrolls Terra-cotta warriors Diary of Anne Frank

You know, I've actually seen two Gutenberg bibles, just not the one that's listed there. There's one at the Huntington Library in Pasadena, California that I saw in the 90s and then there's another one at the Yale Beinecke Library that I saw on a school field trip.
The most interesting thing at the Beinecke wasn't that book, though, it was the building itself, which was really cool in some way that I don't clearly recall since that was about 50 years ago.

Yes, forgot about that one. Looking at the list, I've actually seen a few more when I was in Canberra. I spent a fair amount of time at the museums there.

we saw the parthenon frieze in athens last year, and were not surprised by the number of 'britain stole our statues' comments in the display. There's even a button for visitors to vote on it as they leave.
the book of kells is one i'd like to see.
we saw the pottery place in peru, it was a little overwhelming, as there was just so much stuff. i'd go again just for the house and gardens.
i saw a replica of guernica in the village that was attacked, and i wondered what it's like to live where people keep coming to relive a horror.

and yes, some of these things i wouldn't mind seeing, but don't want to deal with crowds. several are not crowded, though, because they're pricier than the big stuff (the one in Lima is like that, a bit expensive so the backpacker crowd gave it a miss), or because they're quite specialised.

I agree with the crowds comments.. I have seen all sorts of amazing things without crowds, including some of the things on the above list. I tend to have my own list; those ‘must see ‘ things tend to be overcrowded. Timing and luck are everything!

I've seen wonderful things while avoiding the things that were overcrowded (e.g., an Islamic tile exhibit in the basement of the Louvre while the rest of Europe was looking at the Mona Lisa).
I have to revise my statement above once again because I just remembered that when I went to look at the Book of Kells, the actual thing had been removed for cleaning or something so we just got to see an exhibit talking about it! So let's just say never mind in general.

Lots of "things" you should see, but it shouldn't be because someone else made a list for you.

This thread makes me realise that I'm really not a 'objects' traveller.
I travel primarily for different cultures, people, scenery, and (in some countries at least) architecture. Objects, museums, galleries etc are at the bottom of my list. Not because I'm totally uncultured (I go to see them in my own country, and maybe in the occasional big European city), but because the other things about being in foreign places thrill me more.
I've travelled widely but seen very little on that list. And the vast majority of the things on it make me go 'meh'. The objects in cool setting though, like the Easter Island figures, I could definitely go for.

I agree with you Leela. Scenery , people and culture are definitely more important to me than objects.

I like going to museums and seeing objects but they're often not the Important Objects or buildings that I'm ostensibly supposed to be visiting the city to see (e.g., spending several afternoons in Paris watching surrealist movies and therefore missing Notre Dame).
I think aiming for the Objects is a worthy cause since I like having a goal of some sort for each day, but the goal is more like a trajectory that I'm happy to violate if something more interesting catches my attention.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately and I say that if it's important to you to see the Mona Lisa or take a picture of yourself holding up the Leaning Tower of Pisa, then do it.
