Cameras are placed illegally in restrooms and other supposed private areas (hotel rooms, locker rooms, etc.) on a (hopefully) infrequent basis and are discovered. It's not about mixed gender, it's about who has access to these areas combined with that person also having bad intent.
Just because you're in a women's restroom doesn't mean that a bad actor couldn't have placed an illegal camera there.

Agree with oweena.
but are the bathrooms mixed gender in this place? i've been in places where there were either just single occupant toilets/showers, but i don't trust the maturity of many people (specifically young men who've grown up without realising how much privilege they have by default) to go for a truly open and mixed gender shower room.

Yep. I've been in mixed gender dorms, but the bathrooms have always been single sex.

This one sounded like they were sharing a room with a bathroom.

I just read an article about cameras in AirBnBs, too. Honestly I'm just going to continue staying in hotels, though I suppose there could be cameras and whatnot there too. Maybe I'll bring a sign that says "F*** You, Pervert" and parade around the room with it next time I'm traveling, though I suppose having that in my carryon luggage could cause some trouble at airport security.
(edited to remove the obscenity from the post in case anyone's got filters or whatever, but rest assured that the sign would be written out)
