Yay!
But my secret wish is that airlines would substitute some other nuts... it's so sad when you're looking forward to a tasty little snack and all you get is this sad little bag of pretzels.

Yeah, that's the issue - tree nuts are still such an issue for so many people. I am sort of happy about this news but the last time we flew Korean their service was rather rubbish. So I am hoping their move means other airlines follow suit and so we can get good service as well as nut free.

Oh - sorry Hal, I forgot that there can be a general tree-nuts problem.
But is it a nut dust in the air problem, then? So that really would mean that I shouldn't even bring my own bag of almonds or whatever on the plane, wouldn't it? Since if it's just about eating them, you'd be able to just say no thanks?

It is more the cross contamination from the touch, not necessarily the dust.
I have found nut shells in the seat back pocket of my seat before, left there from a previous flight. And there could be remnants on the tray table, arm rests and seats, as well as in the blankets. Have learnt that often the blankets are just put back in plastic bags btw flights. and not really cleaned. Eek. A lot of these things are not done properly btw flights, with deep cleans only done at the end of the day. I think it was Korean Air or ANA (one we flew on recently) who would do a deep clean of the seat if you gave them 4 days notice before the flight. So that was also a big help.
We always wipe down LC's tray table, arm rests, bring his own blanket and pillow for the plane. I have heard of some people reacting from the dust, but that is more when a whole plane load open the little packets at roughly the same time, not just the individual eating nuts. I think Singapore Air were the worst for the number of nuts we say scattered all over the floor - I freaked out whenever LC would go to the toilet and always went with him.

Wow. It's one of those problems that I'm intellectually aware of, but hadn't put that much thought into.
I sat next to a woman on the plane back from Mexico last month who was totally wiping down her armrests, tray table, etc, and thought that maybe she was a germophobe, but maybe it was about nut allergy.

Having a gd with a nut allergy, I understand Hal's post.
Gd had an ASCIA Action plan (personal) for Anaphalaxis which gets updated each year with child's photo, dob, medical information. One copy is on the home fridge, one at school and one carried with her.
She couldn't fly to the Philippines with her aunt some years ago because of her allergy. The airline said they need a minimum of four days to fumigate plane, remove all trace of nuts and change menu.
If passengers eat nuts it can still pose a risk because of re-circulated air.

What I'd like is for people to stop having cats everywhere.

Liiisa I'm like your seat mate from Mexico. When I get on a plane where I'm going to be reading, eating, and touching things, I wipe the tray table, arm rests, and the entertainment remote with a disinfectant wipe.
I do it based on a friend's recommendation who for years supervised plane turn over crews. I won't repeat his stories.
