"Even better, head west to Western Australia where you will find endless unspoiled, beautiful beaches."
It is true.

An excellent guide indeed, and not a mention of sharks or drop bears in sight, but there is a spray-on product called "Bear'O'Guard" for the latter.

I am trying to work out if any of my local Chinese restaurants serve sweet and sour pork or lemon chicken. That advice seems a bit dated unless you are in a regional country town.
And the needing a rental car bit - I did do loads of travelling in Qld, WA and NT without having a car, but it was in the day of using various backpacker hop on hop off buses, and I don't know if that is still a thing.

Yes, more regional towns Chinese menus these days I think.
Although you can still get the lemon chicken at Billy Lees in Northbridge in Perth (a bit of an institution that stays open till around 3am). I know this because I went there recently.
I didn't order the lemon chicken.

As a dweller in various regional towns since 1980, I can assure you sweet and sour pork and lemon chicken are to be found everywhere, and a car, or at least a bicycle, is essential outside the cities. Premier and greyhound do the east coast coach thing well, but there are no longer coaches to Perth, unless you join a tour.

Wow - so how to lower-income people get to Perth, if there isn't a bus (coach)? Or do they just not have a reason to go, or have to save up to fly? I'm thinking of how problematic it would be if people here couldn't get a Greyhound bus to Jackson, Mississippi or comparable far-flung places where their relatives are anymore.

Yeah, actually that's the same here. But bus is still cheapest (of course the catch is that you have to spend two days on a bus).

Liiisa there are local regional buses (at least in the West), so people travel on those e.g Perth to my town is $41.60 for a concession fare, which is what low income people would probably pay.
People also do ride sharing.
But to get to the other side of the country people fly.

It's a big country, I would expect people to fly. Just like getting from the East coast of the US to the West. You could take a train, but that's not necessarily cost saving.

Greyhound Australia used to operate the weekly McCafferty's bus route Perth to Adelaide via Kalgoorlie but stopped nearly fifteen years ago due to dwindling passenger numbers. It's cheaper to fly to Perth than it is to go by train. This applies for the Ghan as well which travels north/south Adelaide-Alice Springs-Darwin and vv.
