We're heading there for a long weekend early June, and I'm looking for a bit of a unique event/location/activity as a surprise for mrmei. Anyone here who knows the city and has recommendations? (other recommendations are good as well of course, even if I've found some interesting travel sites already)

I've only been twice for short visits. I'd want to see the new Elbphilharmonie, ideally at a concert but I suspect they'd be booked up for June already. You can also do guided tours during the day.
Apart from that I enjoyed a boat trip of the Harbour, even though that is a Standard Tourist Thing to do, so not exactly "unique"!

there's a festival-type thing going on at the Elbphilharmonie curated by Nils Frahm! The main concerts are sold out unfortunately, but I'm thinking of picking one of the smaller things and tag on something else :-)

OH, I was about to jump in and say the Elbphilharmonie. I haven't been to HH for years but would love to see it. PG and I have it on the top of our to do list - we might manage a few days up there in the summer.
And yes, a harbour boat trip is touristy but really great to get a good view of the city.

I found a 2-hour sailing trip in the harbour as an 'Airbnb experience'. It gets good reviews, hoping it's not too much of a commercial thing - but it sounds like it could be really fun, and different from a more touristy boat trip I think.
will make sure to pop into the Elbphilharmonie for the Nils Frahm events on as well.
really looking forward to it, heading there this weekend!
