We have booked a few days in New Orleans in late September (yes I know it's hurricane season).
Would love to hear any tips for great places to eat, quirky bars and anything unique to the area.
Already planning a jazz brunch cruise (it's touristy but when else am I get to go on a steamboat?)

My only trip to NO was September 2005 in the week following Katrina. I was there to rescue dogs, and the city was still partially underwater and the place was decimated. I've always planned to return, and see the place in a better state but haven't made it yet. I know one of the supposedly must go places is cafe du monde for their style of coffee and a beignet. I've always wanted to visit one or more of their cemeteries, they're known for their above ground tombs. If you're interested in steamboats, how about these houses designed to look like them? www.atlasobscura.com/places/doullut-steamboat-housesIf I ever make it there I'd definitely want to take part or at least witness, a Second Line.

Oh, and I just found a schedule (and looks like a good radio station) for when the Second Lines, brass band events, and other street parties will be held: www.wwoz.org/programs/inthestreet

I loved it, Oweena.
Great atmosphere, loved the Garden District and the French Quarter (not Bourbon St which seemed like Spring Break). Drank some good cocktails, ate some po'boys and huevos rancheros (I know that's not New Orleans' food but I love them) and beignets.
Also saw a parade and a Second Line, completely by chance.

We enjoyed a Gospel Brunch at the House of Blues (if they still do it) several years ago. We were quite tiddly by noon. Also 24oz frozen daiquiris might be tacky but they are fun. And it's NO.
Ride the street cars - I think there are 3 different lines.
