Anyone here climbed Mt. Fuji?
A friend from when I was living in India has emailed and asked if I'd like to climb it with her next year.
It's never been something that's on my travel radar, but reading some of the info on it, maybe it's something I could complete.
And the friend inviting me is laid back, she's travel savvy having lived all over the world for the past 20+ years, and we wouldn't be spending a long time together, just a few days.
I've got friends in Tokyo I could stop off and visit, and The Man says he'd meet me in Vietnam afterwards. Sounds like I'm talking myself into it...

I know an ex TT poster who did it. Can't remember her handle - Polish, moved to Australia and now living in Hawaii. On FB.
Well, I am pretty sure she did it - can send a message and ask, if you want?

Do it! Can't help with personal experience or even vaguely knowing someone who has (:-P to Hal).
VN afterwards would also be a reason to do it.

I've emailed her back to ask for more details of her plan.
Hal if you want to reach out to her, sure.

I did but about 30 years ago.. seems a lifetime since I was young and fit. Same rules apply re safety clothing food etc as all mountains. Things may have changed but we got close to the summit but didn't want to stand on it. Comfortable with where we got to safely. Just like the volcanic mountain close to me the weather can change in a blink. My issue now would be the huge numbers who are on the trails as it is popular with the locals. At that stage yhere was a lot of rubbish round but that will have changed.
My only advice really would be not to get hooked into a must go date which we see here and people take risks.. make it a if the weather's right outing.
If you are not hikers perhaps consider a guide.

Thanks whothingie for your experience.
We're both hikers and mature. I've turned around many a time on a hike before reaching the goal so have no problem doing it again.
We're going to keep discussing, and since we've got months to decide if it will work for us I'm going to do some research.

I forgot to come back to this earlier. I haven't done it myself, but probably know people who have. To be honest, it's not on my radar at all, and even though I love hiking in the mountains going up Fuji-san doesn't appeal to me personally. So I can't tell you that much about it unfortunately.
From what I've heard it's a very crowded hike. It can also be more challenging than people expect (even though I think it's mostly a long walk up) but if you're an experienced hiker I expect that won't be much of a problem. A lot of people go up untrained/unprepared I think.
If you're going next year, choose your timing well. I'm not sure what the window is for going up Fuji-san but the Olympics are coming to Japan of course so it will be busier, more expensive etc in Tokyo and surroundings during that time.

Thanks mei, yes the whole Olympics thing is probably going to make it even more of a crowd and pricier.
Fuji's never been on my list, but this friend is retiring in 2020 and it's on her bucket list of places she's going to travel to over the next few years.
If it happens I figure since I'm not totally invested in it there won't be an issue if either the weather doesn't cooperate, or the experience sucks.

Phar and mei, I go in July before the Olympics start. I was surprised airfare was still reasonable.
And any photos would be on my Instagram, but I'm guessing I'll be sucking air too badly to snap any pics.
It's going to be a quick one week trip. A couple nights in Tokyo, a few in Kyoto, and one night on Fuji.

lovely! July would be hot though... hopefully it's not so bad when you go high on Fuji. (am there late April myself, though skipping Fuji! already too many places on our list where we want to go on a relatively short trip)

just found this thread (don't venture to travel often). July can be extremely hot so hope it is the beginning of July your trip is booked for. My daughter did part of the climb about ten years ago, thinking she got about 3/4's of the way and decided that was enough. If you need I can ask her questions about the hike.

Oweena, are you still going to Japan and Vietnam in July as planned or will you cancel/defer due to the corona virus?

Oweena, are you still going to Japan and Vietnam in July as planned or will you cancel/defer due to the corona virus? It's 4 months from now, waaaay too far in the future to decide. As of now I'm still planning on going.

That's my hope - that by then we know what is happening and travel bans have been lifted.

I'm booked for Ireland in September about when an article I read says the virus could be flaring up again.
But I'm going to continue believing I WILL do international travel in 2020...

My flight to Japan leaves tomorrow monrning, and I just now hit cancel on the flight. Delta is giving me until 2022 to use the credit.
We're going to try to go this time next year, but even that seems like it may not be possible due to this country's inability to get a handle on the virus.

I liked that because of the Delta credit, not that you can't go or that this country is completely out of control.
I want to go to Panama this time next year, but I have no idea if it will be possible. Should I put a deposit down and reserve a space? No idea.
