What is weird with me right now is that I keep thinking not about traveling but about packing. I can't visualize actually going on a trip anytime soon, so instead I fantasize about packing, which is nuts. It's gotten to the point where I'm actually starting to think of packing a bag - which I would then of course immediately need to unpack again.

I want to do one of those long train journeys in a first class sleeper. I had been looking into overnight trains in Europe for last year's holiday but they were only the cheap ones. Going on the Ghan or the Indian Pacific here, or some other long distance trip in another country would be fun. That is more about the style of travel than the actual destination.

First class on the Ghan is something you never forget. There were two dinner services, I chose the later time. Superb meals, I remember we had duck something and it was magnificent, the entree had a very nice potato salad, the kind my mother used to make, dessert was a trio of decadent chocolate thingies, good wines. The bar was at the end of the dining car. Chef came out after last course was served, the whole lot of us broke into spontaneous applause. And you get a cup of tea (or coffee) brought to your cabin in the morning before you get out of bed. Breakfast is s sumptuous as dinner the night before. I had made friends with two other ladies who were travelling together, we shred a breakfast table. Three little maids from school were we, we all went to a ladies’ seminary, and us three little maids wanted champers with our breakfast but were denied, the sun hadn’t come up over the yard arm! We did have our wish fulfilled after breakfast! Newspapers are free. It’s worth it HD, travelling is about the journey, not where you end up.

We've actually started prioritising those "train journeys wih Michael Palin" type shows, just for the fantasy element. We saw one about the Orient Express, and as lovely as it was, I would never be able to stop thinkinga bout the price. (and some of the passengers were irritating)

Sprite, have you seen the ones with Joanna Lumley? She did the Trans-Siberian Railway where she travelled from HK to China up through Mongolia then into Russia heading westward.
I saw the Japan one as well, didn’t get to watch the Silk Road Journey though. She makes it all seem so easy, it what we normal Mr/Mrs/Ms Average need to remember I she doesn’t have to worry about connections, or lugging a suitcase around over uneven ground, everything is all smooth sailing, she gets picked up, deposited and put down again everything is all done for her. She has a whole c in to herself and the subject of money doesn’t arise.
But yes, I do enjoy watching these shows, you can le@rn a or pus you get to see beautiful scenery.

There are several different ones on here, including Michael Portillo, Gryff Rhys Jones and Chris someone. Maybe I’ll get the Indian pacific to Perth some day.

I like most of those train journey shows. Although I also like Race Across The World because it shows the reality of travel a bit more e.g. long bus journeys in S.America/train journeys in SE Asia.

Do the long bus journeys show the bit where someone halfway down the bus wants to watch an action movie at midnight?

Or when the driver wants to save your soul and plays Koranic readings over the sound system? (The Siwa Oasis in Egypt's western desert did - thankfully - turn out to be worth the bus journey)

That’s brilliant, Tzarine. Amazing Race Australia did one around Australia this year. I also love the very silly Travel Guides, which sends various people around different parts of the world.

I'm cautiously looking at either Paris, Switzerland (both to see friends) or Austria in July, or maybe even late June. Hopefully at least Paris and Austria will work, though not making any definite plans yet until things improve further and need for quarantining is lifted.

I keep saying that once it’s safe I’m going to just rock up to the Eurostar and go to Paris for a day or two. Just because. However, France has just closed its borders to U.K. travellers. It feels like we’re never going to get out of this shit.
