I really don't get how you wouldn't notice at some point between booking and getting on the plane!

99% of airline travel now has computer managed tickets which are scanned as you go through the boarding gates. Here I can only think of two very small companies who don't and you would certainly notice the difference between a jet and a 12 seater.

How did nothing happen to alert the gate agent when they scanned her boarding card?
I've never flown from Manchester, but if it's anything like Gatwick was the last time I flew from there where they don't announce the gate until the last minute, I can see her running to the wrong gate. But the system should prevent you from getting on the plane!

I worked at an airport one summer.
I remember this happening at least once when two plane-loads of passengers were going through the same gate to two identical-looking planes, and someone managed to miss the instruction to go to the plane on the left (or right).
It's quite amazing they didn't twig the 'welcome to your flight to XXX' announcement...
I think the woman in question only realised what had happened when she couldn't see signs to her connecting flight (from Schipol) on arrival in Paris. Asked why not and the story unravelled.

I can't remember the last time I got on a plane without having my boarding card scanned at the gate.
I can understand getting confused about gates at certain airports and announcements can be indecipherable but I don't get how the boarding card fail happened - not just at the gate but also once on the plane--don't they still tend to check when you enter the plane? Nevermind the fact they count the passengers once on the plane and compare that against the manifesto.

Nevermind the fact they count the passengers once on the plane and compare that against the manifesto. This was back in 1998, if that makes any difference (my story, not the one in the news, obv). Everything was a bit more relaxed - no requirement to have a pp when flying domestically for example.

snowwhite oh yes I was referring to the original - yeah I remember it was a whole different ballgame in the "good old days" and I'd think this sort of thing happened a lot easier back then!

Kraken I think you may mean manifest, unless of course the flight was from China or Cuba :-D
