Last Friday packed to go to North Wales. Sometimes I really hate packing. Can't get my head together or remember / work out the thing I really need. Lose the will to live.
But, the weather wasn't warm, and so I made sure I put in my big coat, wellies for the children, slipper socks, a hoody...
And then we got there and summer had arrived!
Ended up making a trip into cheap clothing shop to buy flip-flops, light trousers a vest top and some shorts (I'd been making do with my spare running vest top with jeans, socks and boots). I guess they'll be a reminder of the holiday, and to check the forecast before we go away anywhere again.
Happened the other way around about 3 years ago when we left a sweltering heatwave and flew to Northern Ireland. Ended up borrowing husband's jumper for the week.
I may say it was lovely being in the sun this last week - we visited the Mountain Zoo on Friday and although the children were underwhelmed by the animals and far keener on the zip-wire the scenery with mountains and the sea, blue skies and trees and grass was just wonderful.

Sometimes we need to pack for all eventualities. I was lucky I had my campervan in Tasmania, because I took a bit of everything, and got all kinds of weather in the month I was there.

The car boot was fairly full as it was - I ended up with a shopping bag of 'stuff' with me in the front passenger seat.
Don't get me wrong, we can almost always find space for more stuff, but it's not a recipe for a harmonious experience either packing to go or preparing to leave.
I think I'm on the fourth load of laundry today, what with undies and clothes from over a week, swimming towels, clothes that didn't quite fit in the first load...

I remember leaving NZ in the depths of winter (having been there a few months), packing up two boxes to send home, (including new purchases because carting a lot of winter stuff with me wouldn't have worked) but needing to account for a beach holiday in Fiji, and visits to San Fran and Washington DC on the way home. Yes, tough life, I know!

And it is much easier to pack for one person than a family.

Wales - it's not always raining.
When I moved to London I went via the US and I had my big suitcase sent on from LA to San Francisco because I was doing a tour with a bag limit.
I was so glad when my big suitcase which had my warmer clothes arrived because I had not planned on San Francisco being so cold in June.

But, the weather wasn't warm, and so I made sure I put in my big coat, wellies for the children, slipper socks, a hoody... And then we got there and summer had arrived! . I've had the reverse. One summer holiday in Europe and I'd told Clipper how hot Amsterdam can be in summer. Maybe that was just the first summer I was there, because this year it was freezing. Thank god for H&M, it has been my saviour on a few trips when I need one or two extra items. That time there was a light jacket, and I bought a scarf at a market stall. We couldn't really check the forecast as we left home over a month before the Amsterdam leg. In Japan, it was hotter than we expected - had looked at temps for the end of the trip and so had tried to do the spread of warm and cold climate clothes, but erred a bit too much with not enough summery stuff. So once again it was H&M to the rescue with T shirts. I figure as long as we have a credit card it doesn't really matter if we have the wrong clothes. And some of the holiday purchases have gone on to become favourite outfits.

I lost my shoes in the sea once. We were staying in a small village in a national park so I had to borrow my husband's flip-flops and wear those until we got to the next place I could buy some cheap canvas shoes!

Clipper forgot to pack his jeans for one holiday. He had worn shorts on the first day as it was incredibly hot, then went to get changed and found the jeans were still at home. He wore mine to the shops the next day so he could buy a new pair. He moaned about how small the pockets in women's jeans are.

We went on a trip once where the first night away was so MrSnow could complete a race near Birmingham, then I was off to stay at my parents while he went on a work trip to Iceland.
He realised while at the race that he'd failed to pack a jacket/coat. Emergency trip to outdoor shop to remedy... Quite a useful jacket a couple of year later when I was pregnant. Very roomy.

I think I've bought a fleece or a long-sleeved shirt every time I've gone to northern California - I somehow can't wrap my head around how chilly it can get there no matter what time of the year it is.
When I met up with megs and slim in Costa Rica a couple of years ago it was this freak winter storm, and I ended up using one of the outfits I'd brought as pajamas because all I'd brought was a little summer nightie.
Oh, and I've bought a black hoody twice in New York because of unpredicted coldness.
