I feel so sorry for the host city - they would have done such a good job in normal times.

OK. I’m an Olympic tragic, and was a volunteer at Sydney 2000. And Australia just won their first gold medal in women’s 4 x 100 swimming relay.

At least the Olympics is in the right time zone for our Aussie and Kiwi posters this time.
I'd like to watch some of the swimming as GB has a good chance but the finals are at 3am our time!

I'm working from home ATM and working with a job with a fair amount of flexibility so I can do things like watch the swimming race this afternoon with a kiwi who's unexpectedly made the finals

Ariarne Titmus just won the 400 m freestyle. And it's already been repeated on CH 7. Wonder how many more times they will show it today?

I think next olympics will be good for NZ swimming we've had two young swimmers make the final easily but not get where they wanted to in the finals.

Two golds for GB overnight - Adam Peaty in the 100m breastroke and Tom and Alex in the synchro diving!

And another for Tom Pidcock in the mountain bike cross!
Now I'm watching canoe slalom because I find it fascinating.

Watched (via YouTube) the condensed version of the women's road race where the rider thought she'd won gold when in reality the Austrian had already crossed the finish line so far ahead the rest of the racers that they didn't know she'd won. Don't know why but I just thought that was cool.
And the young Tunisian swimmer who could not believe he won was awesome.

Bermuda won its first ever medal with a gold in the triathlon.
I do like how everyone becomes experts in obscure sports during the Olympics.

Also I start wondering about things such as whether all sports have a minimum age requirement (they mentioned they have one in women's gymnastics)? And how many sports any one person might compete in (several examples of people doing two different sports), and there was a Japanese guy in the 3m synchro diving who was at his 6th Olympics at the age of 40, and whether there's anyone who's managed more?

I looked it up - 10 games! It backs up my hunch that riding and shooting a long career sports - along with sailing and fencing. So, basically posh people sports! (although I guess shooting may be less posh people outside the UK?)

I've been following a bit of the Olympics via the Dutch media which has been complaining about how poorly the Netherlands has been doing. There've been quite a few mistakes made where favourites for the gold didn't live up to expectations (road cycling, mountainbiking, etc). However, then today 'we' won 8 medals (3x cycling, 4x rowing, 1x judo) including two gold so that should shut up the critics for a bit.

oh, and apparently we are in the lead with the most covid infections amongst athletes and staff (8 so far, I think) so there's been a lot to do about that. the quarantine hotel seems pretty awful to have to stay in.

Nevermind, looked it up too.
