So, I am finally starting to plan my summer vacation in July - promised A. that we will go to Sweden, as she wants to go the Astrid Lindgren World again. Also planning to visit a relative towards the end of the trip - but I want to finally go to the very North, always wanted to do that. Right now I was looking at Abisko. Has anyone been there (or anything else they recommend)? Anyone taken an overnight train to the North in Sweden? Haven't looked at availability of beds in the train yet, as I am still trying to sort out the dates - if I don't get beds for us on short notice, was considering to take normal seats and try to sleep like that (that's what I did when traveling to Romania when I was a lot younger) - not sure if that is a good idea though ...

I was in northern Norway years ago and went via northern Sweden and through Finland. I don’t remember many details about northern Sweden except that there were many giant mosquitos and black flies. There was a lake where the Arctic circle crosses, and I swam across the Arctic circle at that place then got eaten alive by the buggers.

well, i booked train tickets to abisko now. had to adapt the itinerary a bit according to availability of couchettes (really should have done the whole planning thing a few months ago). and after booking, realized that maybe i should have paid the extra to make the tickets refundable - thought first it is unnecessary, as we want to go on the trip, but just now it occured to me, if we get sick or something like that it'll be a lot of money i lose ...

I have no advice but I love train travel so this sounds great! I hope A. will enjoy it too :-) (mrmei's son didn't seem very happy on our Austria train trip last year, but now he's saying he wants to go on holiday by train again).
I also hardly ever book the refundable type of tickets, but have now started to... hopefully you'll just be able to go!

well, our longest train trip will be 18 hours (though partly at night in a couchette), so i hope she'll enjoy it ... I actually spoke to an insurance agency today and am considering getting a cancellation insurance for this trip. Normally never do that, but after all the Covid drama on our ski trip in winter, i am kind of thinking i might feel better if i know that if we get sick, i at least don't have to pay lots of money for nothing (calculated that the trains and ferries and accomodation i book beforehand will add up to about 1.500 Euros ... Will have to decide before midnight if i take it or not, as they have deadlines before the trip/after booking the first part of the trip ...

I usually take out insurance if I’m leaving the country, or flying to another state.

yes, travel insurance sounds like a good alternative. I hope you were able to arrange it.

yeah, it wasn't cheap, but if i understood it right, it also covers the cost of quarantine in case one of us gets covid, and the cost of having to return home early if one of us gets sick ...
i booked our hostel in abisko now - i was torn between the one in the village that had a reasonably priced double room and is near a shop, but that is a few km away from the hiking paths i want to go to, and the one by the swedish hiking association, that is right surrounded by nice landscape but only had dorm beds for the same price. i decided for the dorm beds in the end (though a. would prefer a room for ourselves - but we are only there for two nights, so i want to be right at the hiking paths, and as for the shop, i plan to take along some food anyway, and there is a small shop there, too, and a restaurant, though quite expensive) ...
