When people start talking about getting rid of the monarchy in NZ I always think we need to have a clear plan of what's going to replace it because we are terrible at long-term planning in this country.
I'm really pessimistic about the US election - if the orange menace wins then there's a buffoon in the white house if he loses he'll act like a toddler who's had his toy taken away (but with supports who have guns).

Right now the Republicans have a majority in the house, and the Senate is nearly split 50-50. And the current Republicans are right-wing LUNATICS. So the fact that any even remotely progressive legislation is getting through is a miracle. You know we've got lots of really cool bugs in NZ, right? And lovely retirement places?

lol I said 'lovely' not 'cool', tzarine. I don't think there would be enough culture to qualify as 'cool'!
You might be ok in central Wellington.

Our politics aren't great at the moment to be fair. The most right-wing party we have (well that isn't a party of evangelical, antivax fruitloops) has got way too many people in and we're getting racist bullshit and mental stuff like rolling back anti smoking measures.

ON the good side, I don't think we've ever seen as much unity and partnership between the tribes as we are seeing now. Did you read the John CAmpbell article about Waitangi? And Tame Iti's amazing live art/hikoi (It's hard to know how to describe it). Amazing to see him go from someone people thought was a terrorist to a respected public figure and artist. Oh, and reality TV star of course ;-)

I'll have to look up the John Campbell article.
Tama Iti's Ted talk is really good too.

Come for the politics, stay for the bugs! ... birds are pretty interesting as well. I know they're not popular, but I like Keas - I admire their style ... and where else might you have to stop the car to let the penguins cross the road.

I think there is a very strong chance that [menace] will get back into office. I wonder how that will go? Oh, hey, yeah, he totally has a plan. to fix everything. all of it. I mean, he can end that whole ukraine thing in a 30 minute meeting with Putin! I could too, if I could get close enough to put strychnine in his tea, but I suspect that's not what the DT is planning. I thought it wasn’t possible for a person to be able to be elected President for a third time, so how could Donald T rump be?

It really depends. I've heard people say that he is really warm and charming in person. I have family who think he's very funny and enjoy listening to him speak. Personally, I can't stand his voice. I also don't like how he always bigs himself up, but never admits to making mistakes. Like, when he was in office, he would introduce some new high-level official as 'the best, the very best, I only choose the best people'. but 3 months later, that person leaves the job, and DT is saying, "oh, they were awful, couldn't do the job, just pathetic, sad little person..." but never admitting that he made a mistake in hiring them.
He also has a long history of using lawsuits as revenge. He has openly said that if he becomes President again, he will pass laws to punish people he doesn't like, or use taxpayer's money to take them to court. That's not the purpose of a law. I find that attitude terrifying, and just one step away from dictatorship.

He's a con man. People like that are very friendly in person! How do you think they get away with it! And yes tzarine thank all the gods that freaking Marianne is out of it now ETA yes exactly sprite. The only people in this country who like him anymore are either 1) too stupid to recognize that he's a con man or 2) want a right-wing dictator and so don't care

I don't understand how they don't realise that the first thing a dictator would do, would be to take away their guns?

Well they think "surely he won't take away OUR guns, just those OTHER people's guns"

FYI, there's no plural 'S' in te reo maori, so it's one Kea, two Kea, twenty Kea... (but it only takes one to destroy your car ;-) )

Like him, loathe him - it all depends what's in your news feed and what's been suppressed. The more you know the less you like.
