I feel terrible that someone thought that GT (ooh gin and tonic) was intended to be some kind of exclusive club. That wasn't the intent.
I remember from the tree that sometimes we'd post an "Inside for the illusion of privacy" thread to try and discuss something of a sensitive nature. Sometimes even that didn't prevent someone from coming in and saying 'Well it's a free board, if you didn't want responses you shouldn't have posted". Ok normally that was me.
Well, Group Therapy is intended to keep that out. To be the supportive heart of our vibe center. Because of this, and to keep prying eyes of "guests" out, and protect those who need it, GT was given a password protect.
As this isn't a monarchy, I'm coming to you for the decision.
She was not quite what you would call refined. She was not quite what you would call unrefined. She was the kind of person that keeps a parrot."

I have no actual constructive suggestions as to what the benchmark should be, without being cliquey. There needs to be some kind of trust there obviously, but how to determine where to draw the line?
Person who wants some therapy posts something saying so (not posting the problem yet, just that they need to vent). If they haven't already got a password there has to be a certain amount of votes (not anon) - say ten - and if they get ten votes they get a password. Then it's not just down to Webs (is Webs the only Mod at the moment?) to say yay or nay and it protects Webs from accusations of favouritism. OK the rest of us might be accused of being cliquey now and again but then again we always were.

I think the people who have been invited at this stage to join the board are probably 'in' enough to get a password, right? It's just the people who join later? Are we anticipating any/many non-TTers stumbling across this board somehow?
I can think of a couple from the last two or three years but not the names off the top of my head... and doh - first thought was to go to WT and look them up... Oh.
No, I'm not the only mod at the moment. That's why the defining factor should be non-mod determined and universal. I think have to bid for access is a bit if that cliquey thing.
And if granted access someone can't act with kindness and decorum in there they will be sussed out.
Webs, did you give yourself those 50 karma points?
Lol!!
Webs just my opinion but perhaps current posters who would would like the password should PM one of the mods for it. Then any new posters wanting access need to be recommended/vouched for by one of the long standing members.
Once given access i think if someone abuses the GT and the trust/ confidential nature of it, they are blocked- no warnings!
Can someone give me the password? I need to vent!! Just kidding. Doesn't everyone need the password to be able to get in and provide support for the person venting? Or am I being dumb?
Haha yeh people will need the password to get in and support
I don´t think there´s a democratic way to prevent trolls from trolling. Not even here. If someone starts shit in GT we can always slap some sense into them. (or kick them out). I´d just leave it open for now, and we´ll see how it works in future...
I wouldnt leave it open, tho rez! cos any random unregistered guests can read it... Id still keep it locked so it is only readable by members but give any current members the password if they want it/ ask for it
My biggest concerns aren't surrounding someone jumping in and trolling, it's more the privacy aspect of it with regards to the rest of the world.
I'd say give everyone here now the password, then if the forum starts growing maybe revisit the criteria. It could be that we get a fuckload of trolls from MP or PS, it could be we don't and it all stays amicable.
Fwiw, I didn't interpret the password protected issue as being cliquey, more closed to the general interwebz.

Sorry, I meant to leave it only for registered members.

I also think you need to post here before you can get into there - so you can't sign up, get the password straight away. Say hi, let us know what the handle on the Tree was (as there has been loads of handle changing, I'm guilty of it as well). Also it means someone who has never posted can't access the board to lurk and read without ever having contributed on the chat bits.
So, registered members who have a post count of more than 0.

Halcyondaze (how does one shorten THAT??? ;D), that´s the problem: where do we draw the line? If someone really wants to stir the shit into GT, is it really going to be a problem for them to behave in the first, say ten, posts, and then cause havoc?

Think about the person who impersonated Romily at one of the other places, it because obvious within a few posts that it wasn't her at all. So yeah, I do think that if someone registers for the purpose of lurking in that way and impersonating someone to access info, it does show up quickly. And I suppose that is what I'm more concerned with for a private discussion area - the misuse of the information. Calling someone an arse in there, whilst not what the place is for, and whilst meaning some moderation would be needed, doesn't or shouldn't have long reaching implications off the board.

I agree with hal (lol @ the '2001: a space odyssey' allusion), that there should be some sort of numerical posting threshold. Maybe more than 1 - maybe 10?
Q's onto how I harass people: "long discussions of the Goliath beetle vs the Hercules beetle? 973 photos of dragonflies? details of the life cycle of the Jewel Wasp?"

10 sounds about right to me too.
I don't really mind exactly what the procedure for passwords is, but I think a more private area is a good idea. I was "outed" by an acquaintance on the WT this year, and although I didn't mind too much because I accepted it was a public board...well... obviously there was a reason why I was venting about chemo etc on the WT and not under my real name on FB.

I liked the idea of a private place to vent/chat whatever - I didn't think it was cliquey. What I didn't like about it, was you didn't know if you would ever been accepted into the private posting area. From memory they where saying everyone had to agree you where a nice enough person to post there. So yes, keep the private area but have a defined number of posts which have to be made first before a password is given out. Thinking about 25 posts for some isn't that many - it could be just in a day's play.
