'best before' --> this product will taste better before this date.
'use by' --> this product will start to be unhealthy after this date.
most stuff we can just sniff, but listeria, which grows on processed meats like sliced sandwich meats, is hard to smell or taste.

Nutella can separate out after a while so the oil sort of floats on the top, but even then I don't think it harms you, it just doesn't look attractive and maybe the taste is somewhat affected.

I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of “past-date Nutella” — if a jar of Nutella comes within reach, it’s usually gone within 48 hours. If I’m exercising self-control.

I had strawberries on my yogurt and granola yesterday. Bad gastro results. I tossed the strawberries in favor of blueberries today and all was well. I have not had good luck with strawberries spoiling quickly.

i threw away a package of seitan sausages today - a. and i like these small seitan sausages in the style of "nürnberger" (she prefers them over the ones with meat, i like both) - had a package that was still well before the best by date, but had a bit of a milky looking liquid inside that made me a bit suspicious. also, a slight sour smell when i opened the package, but didn't remember whether that is normal. so i bbqed them, anyway, but when i tried one i thought it tastes a bit sour - was not sure though, but decided i wouldn't be able to enjoy them, so threw them away.

I made spicy tofu noodles with a peanuty sauce and fried veggies last night. I was scarfing mine down quite happily. Partner took one bite of the veggies and was nearly sick. I'd used a few drops of fish sauce (maybe a few too many), and it turns out the BB date was April.
I finished mine, he had a bowl of cereal. Now I have leftovers for my lunch, and my gut is fine. He was already feeling wobbly--it's possible that eating a quarter pound of pistachios in five minutes doesn't agree with some people.

Those won't give you GI distress, they just might not be as potent as new ones.

Yes, they loose potency but unless they are liquids (which can separate, for example cough syrup) - as long as they are tablets they are fine just mimght not be as strong. Won't do any harm.
Proof is my mum who gave us aspirin when we were in our twenties that was 15 years out of date and we all wondered why the headache doesn't go away.

WE'd be extremely lucky to get those back into the country here. The drug dogs would pick them up I'm sure.

I think it's crazy that you can get OTC codeine - like wait, what? you go to the pharmacist, who asks a few questions & decides if you get it i had acl surgery so, its pretty easy you can get all sorts of things overseas. when living in spain, i was shocked @ what narcotics were available

I know - in India I learned that you can just rock up to the chemist and get antibiotic eyedrops. I had been to a doctor, but he didn't give me any supporting documentation, just told me to tell Ramesh or whoever that I needed them.
Because of my job I have a rather pro-regulation kind of attitude about this stuff.

Some of you take the same approach as my dad. Whenever we visit both me and my brother have to go through his fridge and throw out stuff like margarine that's 6 months out of date, plus lots of veggies that are well past their best.
He still with us so I guess he has an iron stomach.
(On a serious note, he's had various health problems and has early-stage Parkinsons, so I'd prefer he didn't end up with food poisoning)

We both are super intense about food waste, so at least Spawn doesn't have to worry about that. I have a spreadsheet that I use for meal planning.

us, too esp when my fam usedto tell me that kids were hungry in india & africa My fam talked about the starving children in Russia. Years later I was on a Russian-language study tour to the USSR. The group, of course, was on student rations. One evening we were served some particularly awful mystery-meat for dinner. I moaned, "Where are the starving children? They can have my dinner. I won't eat this." The whole table roared with laughter.

Do other countries have the app "too good to go"?
Restaurants, cafes, hotels, and shops can use it to get rid of food that would otherwise go to waste, you reserve your bag and pick it up before the closing time and get a surprise bag (you can't choose the specific contents but sometimes there is a veggie or vegan option) much cheaper than the original price of the contents.
I've used it a couple of times, but yesterday I ordered a bag from a local Turkish/German cafe and what I got for €4 is CRAZY:
- a whole loaf of bread with walnuts (that alone would cost €4 in many bakeries) - 2 croissants, one with I think hazelnut cream and the other with pistachio - 2 börek (Turkish pastries with cheese) - 2 simit (Turkish bread rings with sesame seeds) - 2 small rolls, I'm not sure if these are savoury or sweet, but they have black seeds on the top
So I'm definitely all set for baked goods now. I was expecting the pastries, but not the loaf, and this is actually the best bit as my breakfasts for the week are done now. I can always freeze some of it if I think it won't stay fresh.

Wow, never heard of that, but I expect a lot of the shops here use OzHarvest instead, who deliver the food to charities.

We have that app in the UK, but I'm not organised enough, and it relies on having places nearby that you'd be happy to take a lot of stuff from - and we don't have the artisanal bakeries and whatnot, so I've never actually used it.

lillie we definitely have that here - tzarine mentions getting stuff from it all the time, and I have the app on my phone.
I haven't used it, though. The few times I've tried, the stuff was going to be ready at a time when I wasn't willing or able to get there, like 6 pm near my office when I usually leave before 5 pm. But I should check it out again; could be more places near the house have been added now.

I want simit now!

Yes, definitely the timing is key - some buffet places offer food really late, I don't think I'll ever try those.
I do wonder if apps like this might "take away" food that could be donated to the homeless, and maybe in some cases yes, but mostly they are small businesses where I think the work involved in collecting and distributing it would be too much. I did a bit of googling about that but didn't find much.

I did think the same lillie (about taking away from others), but there is only so much those places can take and distribute (here anyway) and they are mostly bread and pastries, so have a very limited life span.
I don't use it so much as I'm trying to cut down carbs. Quite unsuccessfully, but at least I don't use the app :-D

.... He was already feeling wobbly--it's possible that eating a quarter pound of pistachios in five minutes doesn't agree with some people. That much pistachio won't agree with lots of people (me included) as it's very high in hard to digest FODMAPS (GOS and Fructan)
