Can't decide if this merits a piss-off or an FWP, but I'll go with the former.
I had a reasonable flight to go out to Portland, with a 2-hour layover; well, Delta just changed it, so now I have a 45-minute layover, which: no. Hopefully I can change it to something acceptable.

Partially sorted. I convinced her to call the police, then the bank, etc. Still lots of $$$ she'll never see again. Mostly she's kicking herself black and blue because she fell for the scam. Those bastards really know how to get to people, starting by screwing up her computer, pretending to be Microsoft, probably in India, impersonating the bank's fraud squad, etc. She'll make a few more calls in the morning to make sure nothing else goes wrong. Infuriating, to say the least.

I'm sorry psw. I don't know the law in the US, but in the UK/Europe she really should get that money back. I know it can sometimes be a fight as the banks like to claim that customers should have seen through even really sophisticated scams, but there may be an ombudsman or similar dispute resolution body she can turn to. At least don't write it off just yet.

What a pain for her! I'm so sorry. Yes, I'd feel like a complete idiot too, but they've gotten pretty sophisticated and it's easy to fall for.

Thanks, everyone. We'll see how things play out today. The police officer said that if they called back - which they said they would - not to pick up. I spent a couple of hours at her place yesterday evening calming her down. I told her she had to keep in touch with the bank, etc. etc. She also needs to get in touch with a police detective, not just the officer that came to her condo yesterday, to see whether there's any chance of retrieving what she's lost. Probably not.
Mostly I was trying to calm her down. She is so embarassed and humiliated that she fell for it. I kept trying to tell her that these guys are very clever and know how to hook people, etc. I hope she got some sleep last night.
Makes me glad to be a Mac gal. Whenever someone calls and says they're from Microsoft I just hang up. Her Chromebook was hacked, and that's not supposed to happen...

I keep getting emails allegedly from Microsoft indicating that someone has requested an access code. At least it says that if it wasn't me to ignore. My BIL had a hack into his bank account and credit card. He told me that a credit card company will try harder to get the money back since it is theirs. I hope that your daughter can recover psw.

They did call back and she has blocked their number on both her cell and land line.
She'll probably never get the money back, several thousand dollars.
This is evidently a well-known fraud. She found lots of info online, and step by step it was exactly what happened to her.

That is shit about your daughter losing that money. It is embarassing, but yes, those people are pros. I have a friend who works in finance at a high level, and HE got conned by one of these. Videos on fb of woman saying "if I met the woman who fought for women's right to work I'd tell her to shut the fuck up" Not to mention, the fight wasn't for the right to work--women have always worked outside the home. The fight was to have access to the same jobs and pay, and then the right to make our own financial decisions!

Not good, psw. I’ve been getting electronic documents to sign from my solicitor. I received one last night, but when I clicked on it, my computer flashed up a warning. Looks like it’s a fake! Meanwhile, I’m pissed of at a woman who works in the cafe where I went this morning, for a quiet coffee and a read, while waiting for a delivery to the pharmacy. The people who sat near me were her relatives, and she proceeded to have a loud conversation with them about private family business, which was very distracting.

Mostly I was trying to calm her down. She is so embarassed and humiliated that she fell for it. I kept trying to tell her that these guys are very clever and know how to hook people, etc. I hope she got some sleep last night. You're right. I'm so sorry this happened to her. I used to work in financial services and was sometimes doing communications work around scams and security. These frauds are done on an industrial scale, the perpetrators have a highly professional script they work from designed to make her worry about something wrong with her computer or her bank account and feel the need to act urgently. They will also build trust in an incredible way. It's a highly practiced art. And the scams get very elaborate... one scammer hired an office and set it up to look like our company offices so that he could post pictures of himself at work. The office was at Schiphol airport, which is protected by military police who are armed (unlike regular police here), so he had a little surprise. For a while there were fake bonds floating around worth a million guilden (pre euro currency), they were easy to spot because there were spelling mistakes in the Dutch, I was regularly contacted by very fancy people who didn't speak Dutch asking me to check on them. Your daughter was a little bit too trusting, but she should not feel ashamed, humiliated or embarrassed - lots of people fall for this every day, and it's about 8 billion dollars lost by consumers in the US alone. (https://www.cnbc.com/2023/03/01/ftc-fraud-cost-consumers-8point8-billion-in-2022.html) Once she's resolved it, and protected herself again it's much better if she can speak up about what happened. The more people that know how the fraud works the better they can protect themselves.

Well, the money is irretrievably gone. People at the bank were a mixed batch of scolds and sympathizers.
They did say that there was a lot of this fraud going sround and that the perpetrators really were polished professionals at it. There really is a precise script. When she couldn't sleep Monday night she did some online research, which matched step by step exactly what happened to her. So at the very least the bank has to ask a few more questions.
In retrospect, daughter is annoyed, to say the least, that the teller AND the supervisor didn't question her more closely about a large withdrawal of cash in small bills. The bank, of course, says everything is ultimately the client's responsibility. Daughter has already gotten the survey form from the bank about her latest visit. I knew this was coming and told her to wait until she'd calmed down a bit and then fill out the survey and give the bank an ear/eyefull, which she plans to do.
She's not yet ready to talk about it with anyone other than me, plus the bank and the police.
As has often been said, it's a lot easier to fool someone than to convince someone they've been fooled.
Thanks again, everyone.

Yes, here, if I want to do an online transfer to a new person, it usually includes warnings along the line of, 'our bank will never ask you to transfer money into another account' or 'this account name does not match what you entered'. But if a person has already been convinced of something, that's usually too late.

Watched a documentary about Hillsong. The Australian Mega Church that's taking over the world. Christians may want to scroll past, I can't be nice about this. Why do people get all surprised when an organisation founded on a deeply misogynist ideology, and upholding principles of controlling women turns out to have a bunch of sexual predators in its leadership?

I can see how the "rock star" and music presentation is appealing for younger people. But the rest of it seems very cult-ish.

I can't be nice about them either. Ex was religious and on holiday in Sydney we went to a service with niece who was hooked on it. Considerable rhetoric, followed by hysteria. She's since seen another light and married a Presbyterian. Devout but kind and compassionate. Destiny is our equivalent and to be blunt fits the cult category .

I'm pissed off that the TV subscription that PG has taken out for the summer of cycling only covers Eurosport 1, which only shows the Giro live as it happens. To get Eurosport 2, which shows the extended highlights each evening, you have to upgrade to a more expensive package which we're too miserly to do. So yesterday he kept sending me live updates talking about all the beautiful places they were cycling through in Piedmont, where we were only a few weeks ago, and I was looking forward to catching up on it all last night but then found I couldn't.
(Actually, I think this belongs better in First World Problems!!!)
