Pharls, The ducks that we slaughtered at the Smiths Creek Massacree weren't just wild - they were furious.
And Sprite - it was a most recalcitrant duck. Its residue even refused to boil down into decent soup.
From now on I'm a chicken or a turkey person.

Just now I learned that the photographer Diane Arbus was the sister of the poet Howard Nemerov. I have known the work of both for forty years and don't understand how I could not have known this.

I learned today that the local chapter of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes, who used to meet in the old bank building, were expelled from my village some 70 years ago following a petition from local church groups.
What could they have been doing? I understand that the freemasons encouraged a close relationship with goats, but I can't understand what sort of immoral turpitude buffalo fraternisation could lead to. In any case, buffalo are pretty thin on the ground in these parts.

I've just learnt that there exists a group called the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes. I've also googled and found out their motto "No Man Is At All Times Wise", which is an excellent sentiment, and the fact they are known as "The Buffs".
This has made my Saturday night!
Now, off down that google rabbit hole a bit further.

Other weird groups include The United Ancient Order of the Druids.
You know what, we need to start our own secret society!

It all gets worse, Oz. I also learned that Holy Trinity, Uki, is not owned by the diocese but by the local community, so if they wish to have satanic rituals or Rolf Harris concerts they can. Needless to say I won't be mowing their lawns and my daughter won't be playing the organ for such decadence.
And when I think of it, my first ballroom dancing lessons (anybody remember ballroom dancing?) were in the Buffaloes Hall at Epping. I am sure that the Epping Buffaloes were much more couth than their Centralian counteparts.

Re Holy Trinity, that's probably because the Diocese had to sell a lot of property to bail out a school that should never have been started. They couldn't close and sell the school because of the government building grants it had received.

The Druids have ceremonies at Stonehenge on the solstices. I made the mistake of visiting Stonehenge one summer solstice, thinking there would be a couple of dozen Druids and perhaps half that many onlookers, not a crowd of 20,000 or so. But my reward was seeing a sign at a checkpoint that said "Press card holders and Druids only beyond this point." Beat that for Englishness.

I learned a new word, "stot," which is defined by the Smithsonian as "a unique form of locomotion typically exhibited by ungulates, where the animal bounces on all fours." I learned it while reading about a mammal I'd never heard of, the Patagonian mara.

I didn't know that. I knew that Prussian blue was the blue in blueprints. It's related to cyanide, aka prussic acid. The blue color is what gives cyanide its name. Greek cyanos = blue.

But did you know about Prussian Blue the 1990s neofascist pop band consisting of twin 9-year-old blond girls? (Supposedly they've rejected that all now, thankfully, since there's way too much of that BS nowadays).
