I think UK taxpayers might not like it if people whose salary they pay lie to them. I'm driving up to the Rochester area for the eclipse. Wish me luck with the weather. I thought about flying to Texas to improve my chances, but then I thought that with my luck it would be pouring rain down there and brilliant clear skies in upstate New York. Good luck with the eclipse! I could understand if it had been a face that was altered, or hands, but a sleeve?

This story sounds like the origin story for a superhero/villain. Also poor kitty!

Thank you for that. Amazing that some of those specimens were just loose, not processed properly! I volunteered for a while in the Smithsonian lichen herbarium, and remember how the filing system required that all samples be prepared in a specific way. I guess there was just some special "stuff Darwin sent us" drawer.

Woke late so I'm delayed in doing everything but I've flipped on this French movie "Le Samourai" with Alain Delon (trying to figure out why he's supposed to be dreamy).
You know how in police dramas they do the suspect ID line up, where the suspect can't see you? Well in this movie they basically dragged him around the station house to every witness who, in front of him, had to say conclusively if this was the guy or not.
I found it bizarre. I don't know why I'm continuing to watch it.But there ya go.

Aww the little guys are welcome to some dragonflies. They must be fast to be able to catch them! That's lovely.

"Platypi" can't be right. The -pus is the Greek for foot (if I had been given the job of naming the species, I don't think I would have singled out its flat feet as the feature to name it after, but maybe that's just me) as converted into Latin. So the plural should be either platypodes or platypuses..

First they came for the octopi, then they came for the platypi…..

Ooh neat, thank you! And so exciting for this guy getting his Ph.D., now he's got a paper with himself as lead author, too.
(Nerd moment: I was a little confused by their terminology in that article - it said "an entirely new family," which wait, what? Longhorn beetles are all Cerambycidae, surely it's in that family. so I found his original article and no, it's a new genus [which of course is cool in itself]. I guess they were just using "family" as a synonym for "genus," which if you know taxonomic order is confusing since "family" is a much larger thing, but if you don't then it probably isn't.)

I think they must have corrected that since it now says something like "a new genus or family group", which suggests that they were complained to by other nerds, but they also don't expect the standard reader to understand "genus".

I saw that, which makes sense, but there’s also this:
“The national science agency CSIRO has since confirmed it's an entirely new family of longhorn beetle.”

I bought a bucket and it's too big. It would cost more to return the fucker than to keep it.
