rom, condolences re the sad quesadilla!
We were going to have Indian tonight but the one I really wanted is pretty far away and we wanted something fast, so: the BBQ/soul food place again it is. Roast chicken, collard greens, brisket, corn bread, mashed potatoes, yum.

I was out with friends at a Chinese new year lunchtime banquet. So good. I don’t think I need to eat for a week or more.

What is the issue with Indian for LC?

Too many nuts for his allergies.
He's initial reaction was due to cross contamination of foods at an Indian restaurant.

Oh it must be so hard, but I suppose you've worked out the best way/s to deal with it over the years. I never thought about Indian food having nuts (apart from cashews now I think about it).
I tend to eat more southern Indian (both at home and out) which I think has less nuts, but still too risky for you.
Yay for Friday!

Monday is the day everything closes here. Monday evenings would otherwise be a night that we possibly had takeaways, because the younger child has a class till 6.45pm. I'm not sure how this happened, possibly because the movie theatre is also closed on Monday nights except for charity/fundraiser screenings, so it's possibly the quietest night of the week for them. A lot of restaurants are closed here on Mondays too.

Hal, I'm trying and struggling to remember any nuts in any of our Indian curry houses. Maybe peanut oil? I mean, there are cashews but those aren't properly nuts, although now I've just fallen down a protein-allergy rabbit hole...
We are being all budget conscious and not having supermarket sushi this week. Plus, the freezer is super full of leftover, so we should probably eat some of those. I can't stop creating leftovers.

Sprite, LC is allergic to both peanuts and tree nuts, and cashews are one of the life threatening ones.

Cashews are in the same plant family as our poison ivy - so I can see how if you were allergic to it, it would be a BIG problem. I'm so glad LC is ok!

huh. Just wondering. Here in NZ we call it takeaways or a takeaway. I'm pretty sure Australia do too. Rom has headed her post 'takeout'. Is that the british term? I thought they used takeaways/a takeaway also.

It’s takeaway in Australia, but I’m sure the British have another term for it.

In Scotland it's a carry out (which is logical, if quaint :-D )

The thing that I most miss about leaving Chezgroosurmer is the fact that I no longer have decent restaurants and cafes within co'ee. 'Twere a lovely thing to sit at the beachfront, sand at my feet, with reasonably priced seafood and byo or the club with its Malaysian cuisine or any one of a dozen places, and all within a km of home.
Here it's 5km to the local pub, which aint bad but you then have to drive home - or 20 km into town.
Food deliveries just aint ever gunna happen here - the postman doesn't deliver and even the garbage truck comes no closer than 600 metres, but there's birdsong, peace, trees and this morning I had wallabies right outside my bedroom window.
Sometimes I get takeaway as I pass through town, but it usually has to be microwaved before consumption.

But USA is also carryout
And that is sad, groo. Chezgroosurmer sounded like a pretty cool place.

I used to love restaurants.
But the quality got worse after Covid. Prices too.
It’s just when I look at $80-90 dim sum lunch for two think WTF? Sure, it’s big lunch and some leftovers but still…
Min $70 for other lunches (2 ppl) here.
I’m lazy tho. Cooking takes hours: shopping, prep, cleaning…. And there is only 2 of us.

I haven't been to dim sum for ages, but everything is expensive here, so $45 pp would probably be about right.
I regularly spend between $160 - $230 for 2 when going out to dinner. Of course the alcohol is the killer - a cocktail, a couple of glasses of wine (or 3 or 4) soon adds up when they are $20-$22 for a cocktail and $15-$17 for a glass of wine.
We have taken to doing share plates which is often the way the food is "meant" to be eaten here, so this makes it closer to $160 when you have a couple of small and one large between you.
The upside of these prices is that workers receive a good wage and don't rely on tips (which are rare here).

Hall: I was thinking, there are a lot of things called 'nuts' that aren't, like cashews, almonds, and peanuts. But if it's a certain protein allergy, then they all end up together--as I said, very slippery research-rabbit-hole and I had far too much work waiting to do all the reading on offer! Yeah, on the East Coast of Canada you'd struggle to spend $35 per person for lunch unless you added a cocktail or ate 3 courses, or went to the Sheraton Bistro-type places (think national company's corporate account lunches). But there's not much of a fine dining market. I had some good lunches while home, with mains at 10-15 CDN. There's good food, yes, but no restaurant has a dress code. I do find it funny that we talk about having a take-away in our house but we never go pick it up. I get the feeling that culturally, 'delivery' is still a fairly newish concept. My inlaws (working class, North England) see a fish and chip delivery as the height of high living. Which makes birthday presents easy!
