I've seen two movies over the long weekend. I saw American Hustle on Thursday and Saving Mr Banks last night - very different movies but I enjoyed them both

I saw the fifth estate last week. Very interesting, about wikileaks and Julian assange.
Also saw blue Jasmine, about a woman who's ridiculously rich husband turns out to be a crook and kills himself and she moves in with her sister to start over and goes a bit crazy in the process.

Everyone but me seem to love it so 10 years on I re-watched "Shaun of the dead". Perhaps I was in the wrong mood last time, I love/like most zombies stuff normally. Turns out I wasn't, I disliked it even more. Hated it.

I saw The Last Tycoon on Wednesday, with apparently Hong Kong superstar actor Chow Yun-Fat. It's about the rise of his character in pre-WW2 Shanghai, so it was interesting to see life in that city at that time. The movie itself - not sure, beautiful shots, but a bit overly dramatic for my taste. Looking forward to seeing A Touch of Sin tomorrow which is getting very good reviews here and just opened. Possibly American Hustle on Sunday - it's a good movie week

I saw "Captain Phillips" on the plane and I didn't rate it very highly.
Also "About time" the new one by the "Love actually" director. The men in the family can travel back in time in their lives. It not overly funny or sweet and it felt preachy on the "live and love every moment" theme.

I saw The Past last night, by the guy who made A Separation a couple of years ago. I lked A Separation better because of the politico-religious-class angle and because it was interesting seeing daily life in Iran. The Past is set in and around Paris and so without a lot of that but still very good.

The Wolf of Wall Street. Not Scorsese's best, but still very watchable. I think DiCaprio was excellent.

Monuments Men; worth it for the eye candy.... George in a uniform, and the delightful Jean Dujardin
Pretty good job of making a story out of a non-fiction book. Liked it, got slightly annoyed at a few rather contrived lecturing moments, and crosser still about the reworked version of Rose Valland. But hey ho.
La Grande Bellezza Love. Love. Love.
See it on a big screen if you can - visually it's a feast. There isn't exactly a plot as such, but I waked out feeling I'd got under the skin of a certain section of Rome's society --an arty, intellectual, hedonistic part.

Blue Jasmine.
Cate earned her Oscar no doubt. I'm not sure how I felt about the ending though.

Has anyone seen The Grand Budapest Hotel? I'd never heard of it, but after looking at a trailer, I'm thinking of going to see it tomorrow.

Went to see The Grand Budapest Hotel and loved it. Reminded me a little of several others, including the Marigold Hotel and Hogan's Heroes, but with a unique plot and cast of characters. Funny, mysterious and poignant.

Saw "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and loved it.
Laughed out loud in places and was still cracking up thinking about certain scenes the day after.

Planning on seeing Chinese Puzzle tomorrow - I really enjoyed The Spanish Apartment all those years ago, and I'm pretty sure I saw Russian Dolls as well.

I can imagine - I looked at the movie forums and lots of people were picking holes in the plot about things that really don't matter given that the whole thing is a bit of magical realism (sort of). Lots of others just couldn't keep up with the plot and more than a few didn't figure out which character Tilda Swinton played. Hey how, there are other movies that I hate and complain about so there you go.

Thanx to BA, last night I watched:
Mandela: long way to freedom (great, esp loved the chick playing Winnie) The Bookthief (I am always sceptical about books made into films, but this one wasn't bad and helloooooo to the guy playing Max, roar) The railway man (really great film starring Collin Firth and Nicole Kidman)

The Wind Rises - the new Miyazaki movie - saw it last night.
good, but maybe a little too 'sweet' and sentimal for my taste. Some great images, and scenes. Of course. Not my favourite though. I think I like the movies more which are really set in a different world, instead of the ones that show a real-world setting (apart from The Firefly's Grave - but that's not Miyazaki, differnet Ghibli movie)
