what also puzzles me is the phone on which i put a's audiobooks and relaxation music - no matter how i sort it into folders on the computer (so similar things are together, or so maybe the music starts by itself after the good night story) - it resorts itself, when i access it through the phone, and is difficult to sort through and find the right audio ...

i think it depends on how much a person is willing to wash, if they need pj's, if they sweat or have body odour, and what activities they plan. we have a holiday in september for which i'll have one sundress that will double as museum/shopping and nice-ish evening meal wear--with croc ballet flats. but if i were planning to go to some posh restaurants, that might change. i'm happy to wear the same shirt in the day for two or three days in a row, but my partner sweats quite a bit more than i do, so he either needs to wash his shirt, or let it get stinky.
also, you're doing a lot of outdoorsy stuff, which means you'll need special stuff that you can't really leave home.

we're looking at flights to greece, mid-september--shoulder season.
flights out are pretty cheap, lots are under £100.
flights back, end of the month, early october, are expensive--even double the fare!

How someone who has cooked for 60 years can still manage to burn the spuds.

When I see on FB a group of women from my high school class (40) years ago got together, it makes me wonder how/if they were really close in HS or what the common denominator was. Or if they have someone who organizes now. Anyway my group really splintered and not everyone likes eachother.

I was recently told that if I offer to help someone out, I shouldn't expect a thank you from that person. Apparently, because I choose to help, that negates the need to be thanked. Thank yous are apparently only needed if the person has asked me to do the favour.
I was gobsmacked. Is it just me?

I'd always thank someone that helped me out, at the very least out of politeness. Surely that's normal?

I should think that offering to help without having been asked is even more worthy of thanks! The only exception I can think of is if the person is offering help that wasn't really needed, and is maybe kind of condescending and obnoxious in some way... but I really don't think that's the kind of thing you're referring to.

Oh yes. If it was interferingly helping without offering/getting permission first, then that's just annoying. But no, we're talking 'if it's a problem I can do that for you if you like' sort of offering. And quite big and time consuming favours. Willingly done, obviously, and no regrets. It'd just be nice to get that small indication of appreciation, and its absence feels odd.
I just found the logic really weird. Like you, Liiisa, I'm even more grateful to people who volunteer to help me out!

A "Thank you" for assistance, asked or unasked is a sign of someone who actually knows the value of the actions of the assistor.
Someone who doesn't thank, is ungrateful, has no idea of the value of the action and should not be helped again.

The NRMA (motoring association) sent me an invitation to renew my lapsed membership. As I made a point of increasing my level of roadside assistance coverage last November, I'm confused.

Following cataract surgery I have been prescribed 3 different and rather expensive types of eye drop. When I googled them I found that two are also available as eye drops for dogs.
Would it be cheaper for me to visit the vet rather than the pharmacist?

The operation proved to be painless, straightforward, uncomplicated and fast and I am going well. I am wearing my old glasses with one lens removed and, one week after the operation, my vision is much improved.
The second surgery will be on August 17.

Do I get up for the eclipse when we're having a rare cloudy night, with the promise of rain, on the one day of the week I don't have to get up early?

Ha, I sorted out that dilemma by farming LC off to Nana and Aunty River for the night. So I can sleep and if the budding scientist wants to get up that is his Aunt's job.

I got up. I'm usually up around 5 anyhow, but this morning is one of the few when I could have slept in. My eyes are still somewhat underperforming, and there's a light mist so the eclipse is, so far, less than spectacular.

Would it be cheaper for me to visit the vet rather than the pharmacist? It's the other way round here. I went to the pharmacy and bought 'human' antibiotic eye drops over the counter for my cat, that cost 12x as much from the vet. Exactly the same preparation at the same strength.

have just seen footage of the palestinian teenager who was in jail in israel.
she's 16, and while i was surprised that she's a red head with blue-ish eyes (yes, yes, i'm naive), i was far more puzzled by no headscarf, as all the women who seemed to be in her family were wearing.

Why the festival volunteer asked us to move over closer to the wall when we were queuing to get into the theatre ... when there were three other expanses of steps and no other people moving through that area because it was closed off.
We did ask why and she replied so people could move through ...

Puzzled at why so many people choose to sigh loudly as they pass my office. I don’t even work with most of them, so it wouldn’t be some sort of passive-aggressive commentary. Do they want me to jump up out of my chair and give them a hug or something? I don’t sigh in their hallway.
