talking with friends yesterday about different schools they either work at or have kids at.
One was down to under 10 kids in one year group.
Another mentioned the number of subs, and older grades (high school) left without a sub and just told to get on with work. Combined classes in the hall to minimise number of subs needed.
People aren't testing, so a lot of these absences are recorded as colds or fevers. And the Yr 12 kids don't want to test, as the don't want to miss assessments.

Distant family member has just died from complications of covid. Hopefully this will persuade members of his religious persuasion to get vaccinated.

Distant family member has just died from complications of covid. Hopefully this will persuade members of his religious persuasion to get vaccinated. Last time I had that discussion the person pointed out that people who have been vaccinated also die of COVID which is true. Just not the point. If only they'd all go to one place and we could see how Darwinism really works out. I started writing a dystopian future novel based on exactly that idea... but then the pandemic happened and I couldn't face it anymore... maybe I should try again.

Yup. My aunt and uncle refused the vaccine on all sorts of grounds--none logical. one of them was hospitalised the first time they got it. they still didn't get the vaccine. the second time they got it, my aunt kicked up such a fuss about not going to the hospital that the family had to club together to pay a cousin to care for them at home. The uncle's family, who are super anti-vaccine, didn't pitch in at all. I'm so happy I don't live near them.

Then we have the other extreme, my lovely somewhat hypochondriac partner who is convinced I'm going to end up with long COVID from traveling despite having N95 masks for the flight and having been vaccinated SIX times. Honestly if it's going to get me despite all those precautions, then it's going to get me.

Well, everyone I know who has flown lately has got covid ... (just saying).
But, I don't think they wore masks.
I got my fifth on Thursday and it knocked me around a fair bit, only feeling back to normal today really. Or, it was a coincidence. Either way, I'm feeling better :-D

I flew to Germany and back, masked, last month and escaped Covid-free. I also wore masks in trains if they were at all crowded. Perhaps more superstition than anything else.
But two people over on Political Stew tested positive within a day or two after flying home in the last week or so.

Nooooo
Somebody we know has this crazy ultrafiltration mask that he uses on flights and I suppose I could get one of them, but I have a strong resistance to looking like a lunatic in public

Hearing about more cases every day in our area. The nice woman at the supermarket checkout was wearing a mask today, but not last time I saw her. As she said, she needs to be able to work.

Still seeing a few people in masks here, but often sloppy wearing (unless they're from NEA, in which case they do it right).
Today I learned that UK hospital numbers are low, but it's hard to calculate exactly because not everyone listed as a Covid case is actually in the hospital for Covid.

I've noticed this when going to see bands - the photographers are generally masked, because they are generally freelance. And if they can't get out and get the photos, they don't get paid.

Just another experience - I flew to Panama via Atlanta - two long flights, didn't war a mask. Nor did I on buses in Panama. No Covid.
Flew to Germany autumn and just now - no mask - no Covid, plus used public transport.
Nobody else I saw in airports two weeks ago - not in Germany or in the UK - was wearing a mask (besides some asian travelers).
Vaccinated, and maybe lucky - but don't let it put you off traveling.

Even though masks are optional even at my doc offices, I still see people wearing them. Even at outdoor events. All ages. Maybe more people with underlying conditions than you assume.

The only place I’ve been advised to wear one recently was when I had to go into a hospital where the women’s imaging X-ray place is located. The hospital still has mandatory masks.

People are back to wearing masks here right now - but outdoors, because of all the smoke in the air!

Masks are required at the festival concerts I'm attending this week. People have come from far and wide and the management doesn't want to take chances for either the audience or the performers and staff.

LC has tested positive again. Schools are such a shit show. Hope he’s better soon. I still haven’t had Covid, despite working in schools. However, they are small schools out in the country, so fewer students and more space, and I usually work in ventilated spaces one on one.

Yes, on Thursday LC was in a classroom where there were insufficient desks and seats for the number of kids. So they were all on top of each other.

Now I'm down with it. Not fun.
I haven't lost my sense of taste, but I have zero appetite. I have also started the coughing til I vomit thing, which makes me even less likely to want to eat.
Headache is horrendous as well.
